Requirements

  • Possess Grade 12
  • Be medically and physically fit (see below)
  • Possess a valid Class B driver’s license
  • Be able to work in a team and handle stressful situations.
  • Applicants must reside permanently within the jurisdiction of Cape Town
  • No criminal record
  • Note: All finalists will be required to complete and pass the following mandatory physical examination.
  • 2.4 km run (Males 12:30 minutes and Females 16:00 minutes)
  • Push-ups (thirty in sixty seconds)
  • Sit-ups (thirty in sixty seconds)

    Candidates will be required to:
  • Pass a written examination and an interview;
  • Pass a physical examination;
  • Submit fingerprints or identification numbers for criminal background checks.
  • Other clearances will not be acceptable.
  • Be required to undergo a medical examination by the City
  • Be required to submit to a mandatory drug test at a City testing location and random drug tests thereafter;
  • Be required to submit to a continuous psychological evaluation;
  • Be required to maintain fitness levels and submit to ongoing fitness evaluations;
  • Candidates are subject to the Metropolitan Police Training Academy’s code of conduct, as well as the Academy’s pass requirements and unit standards.
  • Be contractually obligated to reimburse the City in the event of a unilateral withdrawal or failure to complete a course for disciplinary or other reasons.

Critical Performance Areas

  • The City is launching a campaign to train 1,000 recruits on an 18-month, full-time Road Traffic Law Enforcement and Metro Police Learnership Program.
  • This is part of the City of Cape Town’s commitment to addressing the high rates of youth unemployment and providing the necessary opportunities for skill development.
  • This initiative will provide training in Traffic Services and Metropolitan Police.
  • After completion, the acquired skills will significantly improve employment opportunities within the Traffic, Law Enforcement, and Metro Police Enforcement environments.
  • The City invites unemployed youth between the ages of 18 and 35 who meet the minimum qualifications for a learnership in Road Traffic Law Enforcement and Metro Police.
  • The training will be administered by the Metropolitan Police Academy over the course of 18 months, from 1 December 2023 to 31 May 2025.
  • Trainees must successfully complete the Road Traffic Law Enforcement Further Education and Training Certificate and the Law Enforcement Skills Program SP4/2012.
  • It must be emphasized that there is no assurance of employment upon successful completion of the course.
  • The City is not obligated to offer a permanent position after completion of the training;
  • Candidates will be required to undergo extensive physical training while at the academy and training in accordance with the Firearm and Ammunitions Act;
  • Successful candidates will be required to wear a uniform, work shifts, and in all weather.

    o A certified copy of your South African ID (no affidavits will be accepted).
    o A recent, authenticated copy of a matriculation certificate

  • Applicants who are library members may use a Smart Cape computer at a City of Cape Town Library. (To become a library member, you must apply at a library with identification and proof of residency.)
  • Selected candidates will be notified via SMS or phone when to report to the designated location to complete the mandatory tests.
  • Selected candidates are encouraged to bring their own equipment, food, and beverages to the testing site.
  • Only applicants without a criminal record and no pending criminal cases, awaiting trial, or awaiting sentencing will be considered for employment.
  • Applicants will only be considered for employment if they have passed a required drug test and have been found to be drug-free.
