Function of the Job

Participates in and carries out lifeguarding duties at designated beaches in the eThekwini area as part of established team efforts by utilizing skills and knowledge to ensure the continued protection of the general public in accordance with generally recognized policies and practices.

Important Domains of Responsibilities

Performs the duties of a lifeguard at any beach that has been designated.
Contributes to the management and oversight of the beach in an assistant capacity.
Assists with the operation of power crafts (IRBs and Jet Skis).
Satisfies all of the prerequisites for the training.
Maintains the Aquatic Safety Service’s (ASS) reputation for competence and reliability.

Exceptional Prerequisites:

There is some degree of flexibility between posts, depending on what the needs of the operation are.
In accordance with the terms of their conditions of service, posts are required to put in extra hours of work whenever and however they are needed.
The instructions given by the lifeguard who is in charge must be followed by the lifeguards who are on duty.

The incumbents are required to keep a courteous relationship with the general public and to always be neat and presentable.
Part of this requirement is to always wear the provided uniform so that they can adhere to an acceptable dress code.
The application for time off during the school breaks will be taken into consideration.

Current employees are required to work in any kind of weather and must be willing to accept the risks and hazards that come with the job.
Before beginning work together, you are required to present proof that you have been immunized against hepatitis B.

Essential Physical Qualities:

Optimal level of physical fitness and the capacity to successfully complete and pass the required initial and quarterly tests of skills and fitness (as outlined).
Hearing and vision that are both of an adequate level.
Clear the yearly checkups for your health.

Prerequisites of the Utmost Importance

An adequate amount of time spent in secondary education.
A Lifeguard Award or its equivalent with a current retest is required.
Valid Level 2 First Aid certificate, or proof that you have obtained one within the past six months, is required for this position.
12 months of service with a volunteer Surf Lifesaving Club and/or experience working at least one holiday season as a lifeguard in a temporary or seasonal capacity are required.
The use of radios that can transmit and receive in both directions.

Preferential Demands and Demands

Grade 12 or Matriculation.
License to operate a motor vehicle that is current and valid (Code EB)
A valid motorcycle license with the “Code A” endorsement.
