Requirements

  • A Basic R425 qualification that is accredited by SANC (i.e., diploma/degree in nursing) or an equivalent qualification that enables registration as a Professional Nurse with the SANC.
  • Proof of current registration and registration as a professional nurse with the SANC.
  • A psychiatric post-basic nursing qualification that has been accredited with the SANC for a minimum of one year.
  • A minimum of four years of recognizable and appropriate nursing experience following registration as a Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing.

Responsibilities

  • Guarantee that the Unit maintains effective communication. Guarantee the unit’s efficient operation and effective commutation.
  • Formulate policies and procedures for the unit. Understanding of the operation and supervision of unit apparatus. Maintain optimal nursing care for specific patients.
  • Assume leadership during both internal and external disasters.
  • Possess the capacity to apply and execute procedures in accordance with the scope of practice. Oversee and negotiate with challenging stakeholders.
  • Management and supervision of all material resources, as well as cost management. Strict oversight of the department’s budget and equipment.
  • Collaborate with hospital management to address intricate matters. In all interactions, uphold and respect the hospital’s brand statement, vision, and mission.
  • Establish a welcoming environment for customers.
  • Ensure that all stakeholders and team members within the department maintain positive relationships.
  • Guarantee that the unit’s personnel are utilized to the fullest extent.
  • Proficiency in conflict resolution and comprehension of Department of Health policies.
  • Ensure that you are aware of the Ideal Hospital Realization Standards.
  • Oversee the performance management systems of subordinates.
  • Complaint management.
  • Guarantee that the patients, personnel, and public are all provided with a therapeutic environment. The following are included in these activities: An acute psychiatric unit must conduct a comprehensive and holistic assessment of mental health care users, including voluntary admission, assisted care, emergency mental health care admission, 72-hour assessment of involuntary mental health care users, and further care treatment and rehabilitation, in accordance with the Mental Health Care Act of 2002.
  • Formulate, implement, and evaluate nursing care interventions that are patient-specific by identifying the requirements of patients.
  • The timely identification of risk and the implementation of preventive measures, such as those for sedated, despondent, violet, and aggressive patients.
  • Formulate and participate in ward individual and group activities in accordance with a structured ward program, in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • The Medicine and Related Substance Act must be followed to ensure that psychotropic medication and other treatments are prescribed, administered, and controlled.
  • Advocate for patients in instances of ineffective treatments and monitor the compliance, effectiveness, and adverse effects of medication.
  • Oversee and delegate the activities of the ward.
  • Maintain the continuity of patient care by conducting nursing care rounds and ensuring that the patient is handed over.
  • Guarantee that records are kept in a sufficient manner.
  • Offer crisis interventions, counseling, and support as required.
  • Efficiently and cost-effectively oversee the department.
